Help for the Movies
The general procedure for the movies is 1. Download, 2. Unzip, 3. Play
-
1. Download
-
Click on the movie and your browser will download it to your PC (since the file is a ZIP file, most browsers will
automatically download it. If not, right-click on the movie and select "Save Target As..." or similar).
-
2. Unzip
-
Unzip the downloaded file (many browsers will do that automatically, or use "Winzip" or "Stuffit Expander" or any other unzip program).
-
3. Play
-
Play the unzipped file with "QuickTime Player" (Version 5 or higher).

Installing QuickTime
-
Install QuickTime 7 for Windows 2000 or Windows XP
-
Download QuickTime 7 for free from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html.
If you don't want to get any emails from Apple you may uncheck both newsletter options and leave the email address field blank.
Important: The download works only if you have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
After downloading you'll have a file called "QuickTimeInstaller.exe" on your harddisk. Double click this file to install QuickTime.
-
Install QuickTime 5 for older versions of Windows (95/98/NT/ME)
-
Download QuickTime 5 for free from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120133.
On this page, select your desired language then click on the "Download" button.
After downloading you'll have a file called "QuickTimeInstaller.zip" on your harddisk. Unzip this file to get the QuickTime Installer.

Troubleshooting Tips
-
1. Downloading
-
Have you sucessfully downloaded the movies? Some browsers may have problems with large downloads (the 2-minutes movies should be
around 5 MBytes). After downloading, the file icon should look like some sort of screw-clamp (indicating that it is a ZIP file).
If your browser doesn't download the file automatically when you click on it try this: Right-click on the file and then from the pop-up
menu choose "Save target as..." (or similar, depending on your browser). This way your browser only downloads the file to your hard disk without
any other processing.
Another idea: Try to download, unzip and play the free movies (which are much smaller, around 400 KByte).
If you CAN play the free movies but can NOT play the larger ones then there must be some problems with downloading files.
Maybe there's some problem with your internet connection preventing files from being downloaded completely. You may try to ask your
ISP (internet service provider) about that. Sometimes the ISP is limiting large downloads.
Or maybe you're accessing the internet via a proxy server (if so, disable the proxy server in your browser's preferences).
Or are you surfing from within a company? If so maybe there's a firewall which is blocking large downloads. Ask your network guys.
-
2. Unzipping
-
After downloading, have you successfully unzipped the downloaded movies? Did unzipping work without an error message?
If you get an error message when unzipping, then the file has not been downloaded correctly (the file is not complete), see above.
Or your Unzip program is missing. Install an Unzip program, see above.
Usually you can unzip a ZIP file simply by double-clicking on it: After double-clicking Windows should start an Unzip program (e.g. "Winzip" or
"Stuffit Expander") and unzip the file. If this doesn't work you can start your Unzip program first, then choose the Unzip command from its menu.
After unzipping the file icon should look like the QuickTime movie icon (if you've already installed QuickTime).
Sometimes the unzipped file is stored in a different location, so make sure to use the correct file (the unzipped one) for playing
it with QuickTime Player.
-
3. Playing
-
Have you sucessfully installed QuickTime? If not, install QuickTime, see above.
You must play the movies with the "QuickTime Player". You cannot play the movies with another player (like "Windows Media Player" or "Real Player").
If Windows tries to play the movies with the wrong player, do this:
First of all start "QuickTime Player" by double clicking on the "QuickTime Player" icon. Now open the movie by using the "Open..." command from the menu
of "QuickTime Player" (i.e. do NOT double-click on the movie itself). This way you're sure that the movie will be opened with "QuickTime Player" and not with another player.
If your "QuickTime Player" still does not play the movies you either have an old version of QuickTime installed (you need version 5 or newer)
or you have forgotten to unzip the downloaded movies before trying to play them.

I have installed everything correctly, but...
-
I'm getting a blank white screen in the QuickTime Player when I try to play the movie.
-
Usually a blank white screen indicates that the Codec (Sorenson) is missing, due to a non-complete installation of QuickTime.
So we recommend to re-install QuickTime once again.
First of all uninstall your current QuickTime, see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60342.
Then re-install QuickTime again, see the section "Installing QuickTime" above.
-
I'm getting a green or pink screen or other junk in the QuickTime Player when I try to play the movie.
-
This may happen if the video card of your PC is having a hard time with the so-called video overlay. Solution:
Check the QuickTime Control Panel and set the video to "safe mode" in that QuickTime Control panel.
-
I get the message: "Error 46: Could not load or find the Active X control"
-
This error may be caused if you're using multiple accounts and having installed and uninstalled QuickTime from various user accounts.
Try this:
- Switch to the account from which you originally had installed QuickTime.
- Uninstall QuickTime, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60342.
- Install QuickTime once again from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html.
- Try to play the movie using the same account.
If it still doesn't work try the older version 5 of QuickTime:
- Switch to the account from which you originally had installed QuickTime.
- Uninstall QuickTime, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60342.
- Install QuickTime Version 5 from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120133.
